iPhone XR
Apple's iPhone XR, introduced on September 12, 2018, is the company's new lower-cost flagship device that's being sold alongside the iphone XS and iphone XS max.
The $749(53,813) iPhone XR features an edge-to-edge 6.1-inch LCD "Liquid Retina" display, an all glass body, and support for wireless charging. There is no Home button on the iPhone XR, and it instead adopts Face ID enabled the same TrueDepth camera system used in the iPhone XS.
While the iPhone XR looks similar to iPhone XS, Apple has cut costs in several areas. iPhone XS and XS Max feature OLED displays that are better than the LCD display in the XR, and the XR also includes an aluminum frame made from 7000 series aluminum instead of a stainless steel frame.
The iPhone XR's LCD display supports both wide color and True Tone, and Apple has used new techniques to allow for an LCD display in an iPhone X-style body. iPhone XR does not support Touch ID, but it does feature haptic touch when pressing on the Home screen to launch the camera or flashlight.
Instead of a dual-lens camera system with telephoto lens, the iPhone XR uses a single-lens camera with optical image stabilization that's identical to the f/1.8 12-megapixel wide-angle camera in the iPhone XS. The camera features a bigger sensor for sharper pictures in low light, and a new Smart HDR feature that allows for photos with more detail.
There's a software-powered Portrait Mode and Lighting feature along with improved bokeh support for adding DSLR-like blur. Depth Control, a new iPhone feature, lets depth of field be adjusted after a photo has been captured. The front-facing camera supports Portrait Mode and Portrait Lighting.
An A12 Bionic chip, the same used in the iPhone XS, powers the iPhone XR, so it is no less powerful than Apple's more expensive OLED devices. The 7-nanometer A12 Bionic chip includes two-performance cores 15 percent faster than the A11 and four efficiency cores up to 50 percent more efficient. The four-core GPU in the A12 is up to 50 percent faster than the A11.
A next-generation 8-core Neural Engine completes up to 5 trillion operations per second for major improvements to all apps and features that use AR and machine learning, and there's an upgraded image signal processor.
Thanks to the A12 chip, the battery in the iPhone XR lasts up to an hour and a half longer than the battery in the iPhone 8 Plus. Other iPhone XR features include dual-SIM support with one nano-SIM and one eSim, Apple Pay, LTE Advanced with 2x2 MIMO, support for 25+ LTE bands, and Bluetooth 5.
iPhone XR comes in six fun colors: white, black, blue, yellow, coral, and (PRODUCT)RED, and it offers IP67 water and dust resistance. iPhone XR is available in 64, 128, and 256GB storage capacities and pricing in the U.S. starts at $749.
iPhone XR production was delayed and so the device will not be available for pre-order until October 19, with a launch to follow on October 26.
